A small patio and garden behind a Kalorama home received a beautifully zen makeover.
Water travels for the length of the garden from the upper pool, to the rill, to the lower pool, where it recirculates to the beginning. Lotuses and lilies thrive in the upper pool. A bluestone weir is the point at which water from the upper pool spills into the rock-lined rill below. Smooth river rock fills the lower rill that is flush with the bluestone terrace, creating a more natural aesthetic for the water feature.
A simple ipe fence keeps the small garden space visually and acoustically private. Hydrangeas and hardy perennials fill the raised planting bed that also serves as additional seating if needed.
Thermal bluestone creates a natural look with a sleek finish. Thin dark stone veneer covers the exposed sides of the raised planter and upper pool to continue the Asian-inspired theme throughout.
